What is Recycled Polyester Fabric?

Recycled polyester is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, while also providing the same quality of virgin polyester. This fabric also requires less land to grow, and does not cause pollution. In addition, recycled polyester uses less water than virgin polyester, and does not use as many chemicals in dyeing.

Although the technology behind recycled polyester has been around since 1993, it has only recently become a mainstream material in the United States. Some manufacturers, such as Patagonia, have been using it for over a decade. However, early versions of recycled polyester did not meet the strict standards needed for commercial production. In addition, recycled polyester was difficult to dye because the yarns were of different colors.

In recent years, the demand for recycled polyester has increased. Many major brands are now making use of it or plan to in the near future. One of the most important players in this field is the Textile Exchange, a non-profit organization that aims to reduce the amount of virgin PET in clothing and upholstery, and to increase the proportion of recycled polyester to 36 percent by 2030.

Recycled polyester is a better choice than virgin polyester, and it is more environmentally friendly, too. A 2017 study found that the manufacturing of recycled polyester creates 79% fewer emissions than virgin polyester. Its use can also help brands meet their climate goals and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, it can help reduce the 8 million tons of plastic that enter our oceans each year. By reducing plastic pollution, we can protect the marine ecosystems and underwater wildlife.
